I have a Walters Clock 103 Mantle Clock from the late 1950's it has been working fine since new. Recently if the chime key is wound it will just chime and chime until it runs out of power, which takes along time :) Is there a easyish fix?

Hi  I would agree with Len it is a bit dirty. The reason the chime runs on is it is not locking at the end of the sequence which could point to broken or sticky locking levers. thr only sure way of finding out is to remove it from the case and remove the dial and hands and observe the mechanism, I think a good clean, oil and adjust is in order.  Looks like a smiths movement.

The style of the case is what is known as a Napoleon hat, it has a striking 8 day movement. When things start to go wrong, it’s normally a sign that the movement needs a good service, which means stripping the movement down cleaning and oiling the movement, could be re-bushing is needed, that is when the gear holes have worn and become out of line.

I took the movement out of the case oiled and cleaned and it is working again! It probably could use a more professional service but hopefully this will do for now. It is sentimental to my 85 year old mother as it was a wedding gift given in 1959. Thanks all for your help
