ETA Calibre 2472 Service Walkthrough

Recommended Posts

I apologize, but an error has slipped into the assembly sequence of pictures. For detailed info please see the following post:

When I first started out trying to service and repair watches I took a picture of every step, and I really needed those pictures as I didn’t have the knowledge to deduct where the parts should go, how they worked, and how they interacted. Now that I’ve gained some experience, I no longer need all those pictures, but I still need some pictures. For example, it’s very convenient to have pictures of the train of wheels or certain parts of a date complication, and so on. Anyway, I really enjoy taking these pictures as I go and I organize them and keep them on my OneDrive for future use.

For this project, servicing my brother’s Atira Plana housing an ETA 2472, I felt it would be fun, interesting and perhaps even useful not only to take the pictures but to edit the pictures adding visual and textual instructions. These pictures are made for my personal use and are not intended as a tutorial or to tell other people how to service an ETA 2472. The pictures simply document how I went about it. Nevertheless, I guess others may find my work useful so I’m happy to share it. There are many ways to service a watch and I’m still learning. That said, I do follow the practices taught on watchrepairlessons.com and they work very well for me!

Brilliant. I can see a close up of the parts I fitted in my service of a 2472 movement in your pics. The date wheel sticking issue is still there and viewing your strip down has given me the incentive to try and find the cause. Wish I had a decent camera so I could take pics like these. Well done thanks for sharing. What camera did you use?

Thank you! It's nothing special really. Just an iPhone 6s with a $10 macro lens. For background I use a gel cushion. I don't use a tripod but I do support my hands against the table and I often take several pictures while slightly moving the camera to and fro the part to get the best possible focus. For light I have a well lit room from the ceiling (and during the day from two large windows two meters from my left side) and then I move around the work lamp until it "looks OK/good".

Good luck with the "date wheel sticking issue"!

Thanks VWatchie

I am attempting the date wheel issue this weekend hopefully 16-11-2019. I will take some close up pics with my iPhone to see if the pics are as good. If I find the fault I'll share it. I bought a 10 x zoom for my iPhone camera, so wish me luck. Once again thank you for the detail

Kind regards

Good luck Colditz! Could the date wheel somehow be skewed? When taking the pictures try moving the light around. I've realized it makes all the difference. I do hope you find the fault. It's so valuable sharing this information!

My apologies, but I just found an error in my picture assembly sequence.

The problem is that I replace the setting lever screw after I replace the barrel bridge, when in fact the setting lever screw must be replaced before the barrel bridge. Doing it in the wrong order "works" but it will make the oscillating weight slightly foul the head of the screw and it will make it impossible to remove the stem without the setting lever detaching from the setting lever screw.

I definitely don't want to mislead anyone else to make the same sorry mistake!

Just curious; did you get a chance to look at the date wheel issue again? If so, I do hope you were successful in finding the source of the problem and can share it with us!?

The calendar works of the 2472 is the most sophisticated I've come across so far with its instant date change where the date wheel doesn't move one bit until it flips over in a blink. So fascinating I recorded a video of it here.

Hi Vwatchie

I am afraid I have not yet had the opportunity to look yet. We have had some really good news and I am about to be a grandfather for the fourth time so lots of things going on in the home preparing for the new arrival at our abode and my daughters. Soon as I get a day clear I will be investigating and taking pictures. Thank you for your interest and the video showing the speed of date change.

HI VWatchie

Just to let you know not yet had the time to check the date wheel issue. Soon as I get some free time I'll have a go at it and I'll keep you posted.

Cheers all the best

Thanks, I'm still curious to see if you can figure it out and what's causing it.

Same to you!

(BTW, I believe this is my post no. 500. So, from now on I'm probably and rightly going to be dubbed a "Super WRT Addict". These "titles" really doesn't mean anything except that I've posted 500 times. Anyway, hurray to me! ;))

    • in general this shouldn't be any change. but in general questions like this it be nice to know the specifics of the watch in other words how was it performing before it was cased up and what is it doing now.
    • just as a reminder this watch is a Swatch group product. This will bring up a problem like spare parts and technical information. that I found some links to some information on when I talk about your watch and some of the technical and basically your watch is equivalent to 2834-2 for which I'm attaching the technical sheets. But equivalent does not mean exactly the same you want to do a search on the group for C07 as we discussed this watch before including the technical differences how it's supposed to be regulated and basically because it's watch group there is no parts availability. https://calibercorner.com/eta-caliber-c07-xxx/   https://www.chrono24.com/magazine/eta-movements-from-the-2824-2-to-the-powermatic-80-p_80840/ https://www.watchuseek.com/threads/h-10-movement-details.4636991/ eta CT_2834-2_FDE_481857_15.pdf
    • people be honest.... Swatch is evil for the watchmakers and repairers, BUT not everything in watches from Switzerland is from the Swatch-Group. As far as i know, Selitta got sacked by Swatch as a Movement-Assembler for them and they started to produce Movements in their own Name with slight Modifications. As far as i know, they sell Parts to the Market for their Movements. In most cases, if a ETA-Movement fails, it is a valid Option to replace it with a Selitta Movement, which i consider the Solution for this Mess with the Swatch-Group...... I have no Connection to anybody at Selitta, but being a Swiss-Guy, i still like to have Swiss-Made Watches, but not from the Swatch-Group.   ok ? regards, Ernst
    • Just one more greedy act by Swatch. They started a number of years ago here in the US..cutting off supplies to watchmakers that could build complications that many Swatch houses couldn't even touch. Old school masters who had gone through some of the most prestigious houses in the world. Otto Frei has some statements on their page about it. I tell all my customers to avoid new Swiss watches like the plague,..unless they just want an older one in their collection that still has some parts out on the market, or they have really deep pockets and don't mind waiting months and paying through the nose to get it back. Plenty of others to choose from..IE Seiko,..or other non-swiss brands Even a number of Chinese brands are catching up with the Swiss,..and I think that in time, their actions will be their downfall
    • Yes. If that's not what you are experiencing...start looking for something rubbing. A 1st guess is that one of the hands is rubbing against the hole in the center of the dial. Especially if you now have lower amplitude in face up/ face down positions.
