wind up alarm clock repair

        I acquired a repairable alarm clock that has EXCESSIVE end shake on the balance.     is there a suggested clearance?  vin   p.s. i'll  post pic.s tomorrow.

I can't tell from the photo. Is the balance on cone shaped pivots?

If so one of the cups the pivot sits in usually is threaded on the outside and screws into the main plate so you can adjust endshake by doing the cut in tighter or out if not enough endshake.

  yes sir, forgot to mention "cone shape",  the  ajuster is a good thing,  i have over tightened the staff in the past.  this one is "floating" almost 1/16 inch !   i decided not to tighten the staff.  it's back together and keeping good time. Thanks,  vin
