Hairspring CGS & specifications.

How do I find out the CGS parameters and specifications needed to place order with the hairspring producer.

What tool to measure torque vs radial displacement with?  I have heard of ergometer.

I am sure the subject has been previously covered, no luck with the search function.

Thanks in advance.

Best to contact the hairspring producer.  Years ago you could get charts for this sort of thing. These days I think it is beyond most watch repairers.

How can you contact an hairspring producer. There are only like 2 or 3 in Switzerland and they don't correspond with repairers or individuals.

You stated my next question and answered it. My order would be for five hundered HS which I don,t think meet their MOQ either. So back to fixing HS?

Correct, and as you noted the British has a website and contact info. The Swiss have the website and a marketing but only talk to mov't producers when obliged by regulations and wide trade agreements (see link below), and good luck about talking to Chinese for less than 1,000 pieces. I'm not aware of any production in India., the only remaining producing country is maybe Russia, then we have Japan and the countries where they own factories, but both of them don't produce to customer specifications.

I don't think you will have any luck talking to manufacturers, and only with the old way of scouring Ebay can ger you a solution.
If you have trouble with shipping or paying from your country just PM and we'll find a way.

Hey we could make a WRT mov't , limited edition 1,000 pcs, ahaha
Yes if you post interest on Chinese websites you will get follow-on emails. That is just proper marketing, as invented in America 200 yrs ago. My own country telesales are worst.

Thanks for your help offer, very kind of you.

It would be absolutely doable, check for example "chinese watch group project" on WUS. But as it happens this is more a repair site than a collector's one, so I doubt it would raise enough volume. Then again, stay tuned for crowdfunding projects by the usual suspects.

Ya, collectors ideas. I enjoy repair, just drifted into collecting.

  • 2 years later...

Damaging hairsprings is I am afraid a serious issue today because finding replacements is really difficult.. The Breguet hairspring is another added complication ,achieving the overcoil is difficult and I have failed trying  to achieve it myself. However with nothing to loose I would first try and repair the damaged spring. If it just becomes un repairable spring then the only option is to try to take measurements of the hairspring and search for a replacement. This company supply new springs, most are un collected and they are very slow in delivering. The other issue is I have never worked out their size system.

I think we have to set the right expectations about the offering from that company. We had a long discussion about them and their way of measuring hairsprings earlier on this topic. My conclusion after some reasoning:

First thing that one can notice is that the O.D. starts at 6mm, which could be right for a 12mm balance wheel, something like a 13"" mov.t! Based on that only, I suppose these are not wristwatch, and possibly not even clock hairspring. Rather, have been made for a variety of other devices, like speedometers, detonation timers, pressure meters, just like their home page says.

To which Master praezis replied

Totally agreed. Most springs were made from bronze alloy, those can be used for alarm clocks at best.

I have found the “ British Precision Springs” I purchased approx 5 years ago. I also have some I purchased on eBay as well and the ones I purchased are to small for clocks. I measured the height and strength for my reference so I had a reference point for any further purchases. However the issue was it took over three months for them to supply and that was only after many emails and telephone conversations.
Looking at their web site it looks like they now only supply a few that are colleted. 60961372-D22A-47AA-8A79-B3BCE517C49B.thumb.jpeg.3244ae0fa088b56f8ed7b20bf145f1b7.jpeg

For which mov.t are these? The point I was trying to make earlier, is that in their published list there is practically no wristwatch hairspring for sale.

I cannot remember the watch, it was 5 years ago but it was for a watch. Agree that the majority of springs on the site seem to be for clocks which is a real pity as there is a definite gap in the market to be filled.

Of metals/ alloys  britishprecisionhairspring are made , Nickelsilver recommended Nispan but Praeis didn't sound impressed with their products. Been thinking if their spring meets the low standard I think is suitable for my vintage Oris movements.

I tried contacting the company twice but no replay so far, Clockboy is very right they are awefully slow.

At about the time email became ubiquitous I have learned that if someone doesn't reply within few days, it never will.

Some "companies" are just individuals that have bougth or iniherited old stock and lazily sell it online.

    • I've remained silent on this thread, and at the risk of upsetting everyone, the thing that worries me the most the the apparent absence of Mark. The moderators do a great job and the members also pitch in, and the site seems to run itself, but it is a concern for the future of this forum when the owner is absent for all intents and purposes. Like many of the comments above I would hate to log in one day and things be closed down as I rely on this site for ideas and knowledge and also cheer me up. maybe the Moderators could reach out to him, assuming he does not read this thread, and express our concerns and let us know the plans going forward? some kind of WRT ark
    • That was the exact reason for me starting this thread watchie. Still we haven't worked out how the regulars are going to hook up if it goes tits up. I honestly think something should be arranged to stay in contact, we all help each other so much.
    • Yeah ive watched that a few times before,  i couldnt find my old school dividers to scribe it up 😅 Yep thats the guy i bought a roll from . Thanks Nicklesilver that answers that perfectly and more or less what i thought an experiment over time would prove . The jumper arm is quite thick along its length, i left it that way intentionally, i thought the original was probably very thin, i didnt see that it was already missing. Setting isn't particularly stiff as such just positive, i still need to take it out and polish where it mates with the stem release.
    • Yes, "Sold out" is difficult to understand. There doesn't seem to be a lot going on. It's been nine months since any new video was published on the Watch Repair Channel. The Level 4 course on watchfix.com has been in progress for what feels like forever (several years!?). Maybe Mark's enterprises aren't doing well or perhaps already so profitable there's nothing much to motivate him for more material. Or, perhaps these days he's more into crochet. The real reason is probably something entirely different but it would be nice/interesting to know. I don't mean to sound gloomy or pessimistic, but I wouldn't be surprised to be met by an HTTP 404. Every day feels like a gift. Speaking of watchfix.com I've been postponing the "Level 5: Servicing Chronograph Watches" course for a very, very long time. Anyway, I just enrolled on it so it's going to be very interesting to see the videos. I must say, IMO there's nothing really that can compete with Mark's courses when it comes to presentation and video quality. It's simply world-class and makes me associate with some really expensive BBC productions.
    • Steel has some funny properties, or at least counterintuitive. The modulus of elasticity is effectively (not exactly, but close enough) the same for steel that is annealed and hardened. What changes is the point of plastic deformation* . If the movement of your spring doesn't pass that, it should work fine. It looks a little thick, I would thin it a bit maybe from the main body out about halfway, maybe 10-20% thinner (not in thickness, along its form). But if it works it works!   *So- if you have two bars of the same steel, one annealed, one at 600 Vickers (general hardness watch arbors might be), clamp them to a table so the same length is hanging out, and put a weight on the ends, they will bend the same amount. But if you continue to add weight, then remove it, at a point the annealed bar won't return to its original straightness. That's the point of plastic deformation. But up to that point, as springs, they are the same. However- their wear characteristics will be very very different. And getting the hardened bar past its point of plastic deformation takes a lot more effort.
