Pallet cock

Hi

I have just started my first rebuild.

I'm hoping to get help.

I'm doing my first rebuild and i've come to the escape wheel and the pallet (the anchor thing with 2 jewels that interacts with escape wheel)

Do they just have to be placed on the jewel? I can see no hole within the jewel to accept the escape wheel or pallet.

It just seems very loose.

Is this correct or have i made another mistake

Thought i would ask before screwing down the pallet cock.

cheers

Huh... Very odd that a pivot jewel would have no hole for the pivot. Can you provide a picture of the situation? Could it be a capped jewel but with hole jewel missing?

I think i've explained wrong,There's a hole with a jewel at the bottom of each hole. The pallet  and escape wheel both fit in the hole. but there no hole, In the jewel itself? So the escape wheel and pallet are loose fitting into there holes.

God i hope i've explained that better

apologies

Have you looked at any YT vids of how a watch works? Sorry I don't have a link handy but there are a bunch, some of tge old ones from Hamilton and Elgin/ Waltham are superb, very clearly showing the function of each part with animation and everything.

If you can't see the hole you are not using a loupe.

Then if you see the hole, but the wheel or pallet fork fits loosely as in never finding its place , then the pivot has been snapped.

See the two purple hole? the jewel holes? The escape wheel axle or arbour goes in to 1 hole. and pallet? or fork? axle arbour goes in other.?

The teeth intermesh escape moves fork or pallet which then in turn moves balance..

But both escape and fork are loose.

Yes. But the pallets would line up with the view holes in green and I can't see anywhere else the escape wheel would go.

That's why I think the escape jewel is missing.  It should be in the hole circled by the left green circle.

Then I see no obvious place for the escape wheel in the plate.

The beauty with escapements is the fact there has been so many different solutions throughout time, take for example the escapement in a pin-lever, sometimes you have them setup like a super duper co-axial speed racer.
So in this case one really can't tell what it is or how it is configured until he posts Pictures of the complete movement, before strip  or at least Pictures of the escape Wheel and fork.

    • A already know the size movement I have the problem is the dial a had purchased has a dimension 20.6mm wide a want to find a watch case that going to fit the dial perfectly
    • Hi.  I would like to take issue here regarding battery driven , watches, clocks, etc. I will and do repair these clocks in fact I have sever al in my collection as well as the regular mechanical ones. I have one on my mantle piece over 60 years old tha belonged to my wife’s Aunt,  long gone Iam afraid and it has been cleaned etc and never missed a beat and is accurate. Every one has their preduices as regards Electrical /electronic Horology but I regard it as part of the progress time line of the art of Horology and to be treated as such. Like Darwin’s theory of evolution it evolved.  Two cavemen knocking rocks together and a shard broke off , looking at it he worked out if it was stuck on the end of a stick he would have a spear. Likewise his pal seeing what he was up to picked up a piece  and did the same, now that’s evolution. Some clockmaker decided to build a clock that ran with a battery and no spring to wind up and break, progress and both the mechanical and battery driven clocks evolved, the battery ones got better to the point that if it broke you changed the complete unit. Likewise watches did the same but both can be repaired by people who approach Horology with an open mind without preduice.  We all have our likes and dislikes bu I for one would never dismiss any technology because I don’t like it.   The mobile phone is a good example of modern technology at work as is the automotive industry. There buttons and switches in my car I don’t use because to me they are not nesessary but I still drive the car.
    • I haven't gone through all the reading of what it might be or not. The first thing I would do if nothing obvious stands out is replace the mainspring, you have to start at the source of the power. Nine times out of ten that is the problem.
    • Haha. You're just in a wicked mood today John 😅
