Give away

I have some tools I'm giving away. Nothing spectacular. All vintage or antique. All still in good condition, can be used today.

These tools are all that's left of a life long watch repair/Jewelers man's business. Sadly he passed and well... This is the truth of what happens to your stuff after one does.

It gets gone through, and most gets tossed if the family isn't interested in it. Or after they grab the gold and silver and valuables I should say. Same with those that go through it after...

These trinkets are all that's left...

But! I did salvage them, and thought I'd pass then on to someone that can use them.

And please, I'd prefer these go to an end user. Not a reseller.

Pick what you want, send me a PM indicating which item you want and a mailing address. I'll get them in the mail to you as soon as I can.

1) 4 Oilers and old bottle of clock oil with a little left in it. Bottle label reads "W. F. NYE Inc., Electric Clock Oil, New Bedford Mass. USA" and something on the other side I can't make out.

2) Tiny micro something. I don't know what it is. It's squared and comes to a point. I thought it was a file at first but it's not. Almost like a really long needle only out of hardened metal.

3) Mixed set of vintage mini screwdrivers. They need to be cleaned up, but they're all good. I'd keep them but I have 5 or 6 sets already.

4) Dura Cast Type Set in original box. Style 2833. For hot stamping. Missing one or two letters.

5) I'm not sure what this tool is. I have another post asking if anyone recognizes it. But it's up for grabs as well.

If you can make out what that writing says on the box, please let me know. It'll satisfy my curiosity.

I have one more thing I'm giving away as well, I'll add to this post later. I found out what it was a while back but forgot. I have to take a pic of it before adding it.

As mentioned, nothing spectacular, but maybe someone could use these tools even though their old.

I'll ship to wherever in USA, sorry, I'm not willing to pay shipping overseas.

Cheers...

And there's this...

6) A can of something. As mentioned, I found out what it was at one time but since have forgotten what it is.

It's about the size of a old 35mm film can. Embossed on the lid is " IMPORTANT, Save Can, Instructions inside"

Of course there's no instructions inside...

Anyway.. if you want one or all of these items doesn't matter. Take your pick. I'll send it to you.

Don't complain you don't have it, when here it is for free. Might not be the latest greatest but... You know what I mean. ;-)

Cheers...

Item 2 I'd guess is a smoothing broach. Used like a file.

Item 5, perhaps a pin spring bar tool?

Item 6 is an early version of the pointless box, the one with a toggle type switch that when you flick it one way a little arm comes out and flicks it the other :D

This one just has you looking for nonexistent instructions.

.. or maybe you are meant to print your own instructions and place them inside,  using the current contents ground down to make ink, and stamped on the paper of your choosing with the Dura Type letters.

Nothing there I need, but good on you to offer them for free to someone who does

Thanks for the kind words. I figure there's going to be someone just starting out that might like them. Someone that likes the vintage glass oilers. Someone putting together a vintage antique watch repair kit... I don't know. I was hoping they're be useful to someone.

BTW - though it's been a while, from what I remember #6 is some type of polishing rouge. You're suppose to mix it with something to make up the polish I think. And that's how it's suppose to look from others I've seen. I believe that's what it is. I'm not positive. As mentioned, It's been several months since I found a like canister like that online. I'll see if I can find it again over the coming days.

So everyone knows that's interested, all these tools where owned and used by the same watch/clock repair, jeweler that owned the Boley C60 I refurbished and posted about here in the forum.

Best I can tell he was still in business back in 1979 locally. Of course since, retired, and passed away.

As stated, I'm just trying to pass on some little things I managed to aquire that were his tools of the trade.

Not the Boley C60 though..  that one I'm keeping for a bit. :-) It's a real nice vise.

Hi Chase, that's a fine gesture and the old watchmaker will be pleased his stuff will be used again by another watch fan. I personally don't need anything but if you give it another 3or4 days many more WRT members will have seen your post and I am sure will take up your offer.

I'd love to take the screwdrivers out of your hands. Still available?

Lol... I was just coming to post a new pic on the screwdriver set.

I was up all night painting the micro shop I have and finally got things put back and had a couple hours to kill since sleep is out of the question this early so I decided to kill a couple hours cleaning them up.

There's 2 vintage Brass. One Brass and SS top. One SS I think with Aluminum removable top (Red). Two SS (I think) with plastic top. And one LS Starret (a very nice driver, you'll see).

A nice variety set so you can see what kind you prefer.

I didn't do a full blown detail on them. But given they've been sitting in storage for what.. 30, 40 years I wanted them to at least look respectable. I'll let you detail them out. Lol

They are yours... Send a PM with your mailing address, I'll send them out in the next couple days.

Here's a pic of them as they look now.

Cheers...

In fact was wondering how come you had replied to me at such an early time!

Staying up all night is out of question for me, even when partying! I have a business meeting after a red eye flight next month and already feel the pain.

Yeah, no sleep till tonight. Had to pull everything out of the shop, paint it floor to ceiling, wait to it to dry enough, then put it all back. That was a long 24hrs... 90% tools, work bench, floor to ceiling shelving packed with more tools...

I've been putting it off for 4 months. Yesterday morning I said screw it. It's getting done, now!

And it all had to be done before others arrived that work in the building.

Fast forward to this morning... Even the morning 2 cups of coffee ain't helping I'm so beat. Lol

But it's done. Huge difference! Worth the work. So, I'll sleep good tonight!

My dad once said real men love pink. i responded with 'said no one ever.'

I'll never forget one night where I actually wore pink when my godson accompanied me to the ballet. His mom suggested we match our suits and he begged that we wear pink. So I got a pink shirt and tie. His mom got him a matching set.

My routine before any show is to go to the neighboring hotel and get a glass of scotch at the pool bar. While we were in that spot, the bartender comp'd my drink, his rootbeer, and my parking pass. Nice.

Went to the ballet, we drew alot of attention from some nice looking ladies.

After the show, we went to dinner. I got him whatever he wanted, got my entree, few glasses of wine, dessert for both of us. Bill was roughly $90. We waited and waited for our check. Finally flagged a waitress and was told a group of ladies at a nearby table paid our bill. TOld the waitress how touched they were that we went out wearing pink for breast cancer awareness month. Internally I was laughing, externally I was like, 'oh yes, that's right, breast cancer for real.'

I told the squirt that im taking him out more often wearing pink. Never did it again. He's 16 now and, well, he's no longer interested in pink as one would expect.

@calcmandan

Good story.

I've owned and wore light pink sport jacket, a Miami Vice kinda thing. I like Pink the singer. And hot pink on some girls... My business card was Hyper blue with Hot pink lettering and everyone loved it.

Never crossed my mind till you just mentioned it about the Breast Cancer color thing. So your comment hit home as I had the exact thought you mentioned after you brought it up. "Oh yeah, that's right.!" Lol

This was one of a bunch of purple and hot pink envelopes another business had that no longer needed them. I gave all but a couple away. Hot pink and the others were purple. First time I've had a chance to use them.

I gave them to a ebayer here that sells auto parts. About a hundred or so. He loved them so much after using them he asked if I had more.

For one, they were the perfect size for some of his parts. His customers loved them since they instantly recognized a package from him. And his sales increased once he started using them. He also noticed packages seemed to get to the destination faster.

I guess if you're looking at white and manila envelopes all day a hot pink or purple one would stand out.

They'll definitely see it coming! Lol. Hard to lose a package that color.

If I were a business, I'd definitely consider using bright colored envelopes for mailing. Something that makes it stand out from the others.

Cheers...

Are they still available?

Depending on how much they cost to ship, maybe?

Sorry I haven't been around to respond. And the notification doesn't send email notification for some reason. Maybe a setting..  anyway.

Yes they're still available.

Don't worry about shipping, I'm not along anyone to pay anything. I have it covered. A gift is a gift. As long as they'll be useful to  someone, I'm sure the owner would want them to have them. He's the one to thank. I'm just passing them out and seeing they get to those that want them.

Another item up for give away. I had these tucked in another place... From the same gentleman that previously owned the Watch Clock repair/Jewelery shop.

This is a vintage set of watchmaker/clockmakers smoothing/cutting broaches. You'll need an appropriate pin vise to use them of course.

They didn't photograph well, sorry... The previous owner owned the Boley vise and other high end tools so I doubt these are cheap knockoffs or what not. Should be a decent set is my point.

If you can use them, make claim to them and, let me know.

Cheers...

I could certainly use these if the cost of shipping to the UK is worthwhile and if course if it's something you're able to do please.

Mike.

Hey Mike,

I'll only pay the shipping to somewhere in the Continental US... However, if you'd like me to check on cost to the UK and you're willing to pay for it. I don't see a reason not to ship to you.

Additional info on the Broaching set, for you and everyone else.

I stand corrected, these are cutting broaches... Not smoothing broaches. Someone on another site explained what they are, how they work, and possibly that they are Swiss made or Sweden maybe..  I forgot which exactly.

There is a smoothing broach in there as well. The one pictured up top at the start of this thread. I stuck it in there with the rest.

    • Getting back to the issue which is us guys repairing or just enjoying horological exploits. The big worry now is how sound is Cousins as company going forward. The of cost if this 8 year legal battle will be astronomical. Cut backs will happen noticed already how the Cousins catalogue is half its size this year. The main supplier going out of business will hit the UK horological community in a big way.    On the Brexit issue it was about a sovereign country being able to make its own laws and trade with any country in the world. I cannot see what was wrong with this. For those who wish to re join the cost would be very high indeed.
    • Yes, it's the same (old) song and it's getting worse & worse;
    • 🤔 leaving the EU meant that UK was no longer part of the convention and have already been turned down an independent reapplication. I'm pretty sure courts have to be held in Switzerland in this case. There will be a lot more watches stashed away in draws  tbh, folk wont be able to afford to maintain them. Cheap watches will be bought and top end watches by folk with plenty of cash that can pay for service and repair. The expensive once in a lifetime gifts and everything else inbetween will be at the forgotton when they stop working. I know i was being a numpty, get used to it 😄 Anybody that knows will boycott them, but besides repairers who will know. Nope will never buy one, i made that decision as soon as i learnt about this.
    • although not in this case.  It was the Lugano Convention and its deficiencies that allowed a Swiss court decision in the first place.  This isnt really a Brexit issue at all.  A decision that affects both the EU and the UK should never have been heard in Switzerland. I bet the authorised service centres in the UK are pretty pleased.  It's a massive shame, though; I believe watch owners should be able to choose to have their watch serviced by whoever they trust.
    • Hi guys I think that old hippy is correct, it opens the gates for china to manufacture aftermarket spare parts. considering that they already do work on behalf of the Swiss I guess this decision gives the a little more legitimacy to tool up and I am sure they will take advantage of the situation either with or without the blessing of the Swiss watch industry  Having read about the protectionist machinations of the Swiss in the history of Europe they were the only ones to get fat at everybody else’s expense. I think the outcome could have been guessed at but ,  fair play to Cousins UK for standing up to them.  Now the question,  will everybody boycott Swiss watches and Swatch, no way they will still fill their coffers.  Me I stick with the Japanese once renowned for cheap shitty watches who came good through industrial effort and don’t for get the Russians that most dismiss as low grade crap. Wouldn’t buy a swatch product ever how about you all.? a
