magnifying distance

I  was hoping someone could tell me what kind of loupe i need.

At the moment i have a visor headband contraption and if i get with in 2 inches of the watch i can see what i'm doing. but this is causing terrible neck pain and its hard using the tools when your face is that close.

What i need is a magnifier i can use (hands free) with say 10 inches or more distance between my face and the watch movement

Is there such a magnifying system?

I would be grate full for any suggestions

i were glasses so anything i could attach to them would be fine.

cheers

gary

What's the magnification level your using?  I have a 5x loupe that I lean on and a 10x loupe that pretty much puts my nose into the movement.  I think even using the 5x loupe I'm within two or three inches of what I'm working on though and this does create an ergonomics issue.  You'll notice if you look around that most watchmaker desks are raised quite high so that you can work on the watch while keeping your back straight.

I have a stereo microscope that I just love using for just this reason.  The magnification can be adjusted as needed and I'm not leaning far over the work area.

I’m afraid my friend unless you get yourself a very expensive binocular style microscope you are as we all are, the rule of thumb is a 10x loup will be 1” away from the job so a 4x loup will have you 4” away from the watch.

i personally use a Bergeon 4.5x loup, i also have a 5x and 10x for really close in work. I have a high bench so it lessons the neck strain. Time to saw the legs off your chair or get a few wooden blocks under the table legs to raise it up.

you could also build a small box that sits on the bench that will raise your work area, I think horolover made one but they were really expensive for what they were.

Hi The Guys are spot on The thing that's giving you the strain is the sitting position and the height of your bench, Try  either lowering the seat or raising the bench. Th alternative is as Transporter says an expensive binoclar setup, so either get the saw out or screwdriver.  good luck

    • I have it, so until we get a lunch one day , nearly everyday is with my mum at the moment.
    • In the meantime whilst awaiting a better plan, please drop me a quick hello on my email.
    • I looked at it like this, I've built a lot of stuff in my time, building structures and furniture, those are my creations and they will still be here way way after I'm gone. Traditional watchmakers felt the need to pass their knowledge on, ideas that they created . I assume with them as it is with me, leaving their mark on the earth, a way of being remembered. This creation of Mark's has brought thousands of people together to pass their knowledge around,  ideas that will continue to be used for lifetimes. Ideas that should continue to be procured. If for whatever reason the forum ceased to exist, not quite like Ranfft's, that didn't disappear but much less usable. Then that is sad, such a massive loss of communication between good people and a wealth of knowledge lost. There should be something in place for when that happens which could be next week, next year or in 10 years. Might not be a topical subject for a lot of folk or boardering on controversy, i did say i talk about stuff other people dont. But if you dont talk about it and something happens then you've lost it and you ain't gonna fix it .
    • I've remained silent on this thread, and at the risk of upsetting everyone, the thing that worries me the most the the apparent absence of Mark. The moderators do a great job and the members also pitch in, and the site seems to run itself, but it is a concern for the future of this forum when the owner is absent for all intents and purposes. Like many of the comments above I would hate to log in one day and things be closed down as I rely on this site for ideas and knowledge and also cheer me up. maybe the Moderators could reach out to him, assuming he does not read this thread, and express our concerns and let us know the plans going forward? some kind of WRT ark
    • That was the exact reason for me starting this thread watchie. Still we haven't worked out how the regulars are going to hook up if it goes tits up. I honestly think something should be arranged to stay in contact, we all help each other so much.
