Bulova 5ap stops tightening the balance cock

Recommended Posts

Hi!

Since long I did try to bring this tiny movement back to life:

http://www.ranfft.de/cgi-bin/bidfun-db.cgi?10&ranfft&2&2uswk&Bulova_5AP

I got two other movements for parts and I had to refit a balance wheel with his own cock from another movement

The problem I am having is that if I tight the screw of the cock, the balance wheel stops.

If I loose the screw and push up the cock from the mainplete, the balance wheels starts spinning itself for a several minutes, until the gravity pushes down the cock, then pushing it up it again from mainplate makes it spinning again.

I did try to lube but it appears it mate things worse and not better.

Any suggestion about what problem I may be facing?

Thank you!

Did you remove the cap stones on the balance and fully clean out the old oil?

If not the old oil could be gumming up the new oil.

Have you checked the pivots of the balance for wear?

Checked the jewels for any cracks?

Does the anchor snap cleanly from side to side if you nudge it with an oiler with the balance removed?

If the cap jewels are seated correctly and you have not transposed them then the balance is not aligned correctly. Rule of thumb DON'T FALSE ANYTHING. By any chance when you removed the balance cock for cleaning was there a shim between the cock bridge and plate. Sometimes if a new balance staff is changed and it is bit tight a cheats way is to put a thin shim under the cock.

The bottom one yes and appears clean, i have oiled properly it now. Not the top one because I would need to remove the balance wheel to unscrew from bottom, the regulator is not boot type, I am afraid I will never mount it again, it's too tiny piece for my skills.

All these tests are passing fine, in my opinion.

I made a round of cleaning in ultrasonic for balance wheel and bridge, trying to better oiling, I will see if any change tomorrow.

No shim originally found... I will eventually consider one or two hour wheel shim/spacers eventually, if that woudl still make a difference.

Thanks again! I'll try to make good use of your suggestions, this movement means a lot to me.

I'm so frustrated... after cleaning and oiling the bottom cap jewel and the upper jewel it works much worse, anchor snaps when rotating the wheel manually but it does not swing on its own any more :( I used 9010 oil. I will just try to oil the pivots a bit more and make sure all is properly aligned... this tiny movement drives me crazy.

If you didn't clean the balance jewels introducing fresh oil could dislodge the old gummed up oil and make things worse.

I'm afraid you you wont make much progress without cleaning the balance jewels.

Assuming you have checked that all jewels are clean and balance pivots are not bent bu the problem still persists,... I would check the endshake of the balance. A watch this old may have had the balance staff replaced and the replacement may not have been an exact fit. On most watches you can adjust the endshake a bit by pushing the jewel housing in the mainplate up or down a bit (using a staking set). Note that this may change the interface between roller jewel and pallet fork so this needs to be considered.

On larger mens watches you can sometimes get a screwdriver between the hairspring coils to remove the jewels but on these smaller ladies watches its not so easy.

Good luck

Your original description reminded me of a recent problem I had with a different movement.  I switched screws.......The head on the screw holding the pallet cock turned out to look the same, but had a minutely thicker head.  This caught the balance and stopped it.  I felt really silly but it was a very rewarding fix!

  • 5 months later...

Hi

All advises have been very valuable, as well as Nichod one, simple but effective loaded onf first hand experience. Still after many months of wait and try I am creating more damages than progresses on these tiny movements. Eventually I was not able to mount back the wheel train and escapement, I broke one jewel and tried replacing the train holder with another part from donor movements, still no success on placing the escapement wheel at the end (maybe has a shorter/broken pivot?). Big frustration.

Finally I decide today to give up. Still it is important for me to have one working movements out of three. Is anyone willing to help me on the task? I can pay for the work, I don't know any professional watchmaker good enough to pass this work to. It would be simpler if the help would come from Europe for the sake of delivery back and forth.

See attached the current "status" of the project... one sick  Aurore-Villeret 9 and two donors Bulova 5AP.

The assembled bottom one is an almost complete B 5AP but not oscillating and needs cleaning. Also winding mechanism is a bit flaky maybe just needs cleaning and oiling. Not sure though.  My original AP9 is top right one which was cleaned and I replaced the train wheel holding element as I did break a jewel on the original holder while fitting it on the train wheel. Possibly the new holder has more space for the escapement wheel and so is not compatible... I don't know as I could not fit the escapement wheel back.

Top left is clearly a donor in an advance state of decomposition.

I appreciate any help.

Thank you.

Ascanio

    • I'd be grateful for recommendations of good sources of advice on getting clocks with balance spring - as opposed to pendulum - escapements 'in beat'.....
    • Well I am in a bit of a quandary. I can't find the correct colour for the dial. I even wrote to Hettich a while back hoping they would give me the colour code for the dial. The reply that I received was "We don't make those anymore." I am thinking now to silver the dial and use a water transfer decal to put minute markers and the HETTICH logo (which is the very font that this forum uses) and the Made in Germany down the bottom. Not sure of the success rate of the water transfer method, but I have no other solution for the markers and logo. Handpainting is just not an option. In trying to get the top piece of the clock polished, it has progressively lost its sharp edges. My stupid hamfisted effort. I am thinking of purchasing a replacement piece of brass and drilling new holes in it for the corner posts. Why I attempted to repolish using wet & dry and not simply using a paint remover to remove the old lacquer from the brass, I don't know. You whistle and I'll point at the idiot. I also need to purchase some sheet spring steel as the two small ratchet springs that arrest the wheel that supports the weight after it is lifted by the electromagnet are worn. The two from the donor clock that I purchased are worse. I am hoping that I will be able to manufacture new springs without having to fiddle about with tempering etc to the steel. I have some ideas on that front. How many things until the clock is no longer the original? Like an axe. Heard a woodchopper on tv once saying that he had replaced the head on his axe twice and the handle three times, but it was the same axe that he began woodchopping with. 😉
    • I use the exact OD and it fits in with a little force and a pleasing 'click' so it's snug and wont rotate within the holder, but that depends on how you have set up and calibrated your printer so you may need to play with the settings/dimensions a little to allow for any discrepancies in your printer calibration. PS I just finished (2 days ago) a new revision which automatically prints the movement OD on the bottom of the holder, I'll see if I can upload it here Here is rev 4 remember to change the .pdf to .FCStd so it will open in FreeCAD - also you may need to install the LiberationSansBold font and tell FreeCAD where it lives on your PC, or change the font to something you already have on your system. Para Movement Holder V4.pdf Examples below:
    • Only someone on this forum would ever understand the Oooooo I just did
    • Hi, guys I'm very interested in printing out this design as I've seen the orignals used on many occasions and I'm fed up with my movements popping out the standard Bergeon type so want to give this type a go 😀  As I've never used this type before should the movement be a snug fit in the holder? Once you've measured the diameter of the movement do you put this exact value in the spreadsheet or increase it a little 🤔 Comments would be appreciated 👍
