Balance Wheel Install

Recommended Posts

Hello

I'm trying to install a balance wheel into a 2824 clone and am finding it rather difficult. Sometimes I will get it installed and it seems fully operational, however when I tighten down the retaining screw, the balance will stop oscillating. Does this mean the balance is installed incorrectly?

Thanks in advance for any help that can be provided?

Michael

Hi  Sounds like you are running out of end shake As Nucejo says ckeck the end stones. If you had the shock jewels off for cleaning ,  Also check where the balance cock sits for a small mark. On some watches usually the chinese types there is a dink made by a screwdriver of graver used to raise the balance cock slightly to gain end shake, also seen shims fitted for the same purpose

Hello

I didn't oil the end stones as the hinges / claspes seemed a bit dodgy. I'll look into the balance cock. I was wondering how successful I'd be if I installed the escape wheel then pallet fork and then the balance wheel followed by the other wheels; sort of in the reverse order.

Thanks for your suggestions.

You should install the center wheel first, followed by the rest of the train wheels. Wind the watch some and inspect, in a horizontal view, the freely spinning gears for wobble and freedom of turning. Next, proceed with pallet fork and balance install.

Balance wheel stops —
Check that the forks of the pallet fork aren’t touching the roller table.
Check that the hairspring is flat and was not bent due to hanging on one of the center wheel teeth when removed. It could be touching either the balance wheel arm or cock plate.
