1968 Timex Marlin

I'm helping an old friend that's trying to repair a watch that belonged to his late wife. He'd like to pass it down to his granddaughter as a gift. He is really good repairing old clocks but has no real experience on watches.

The watch in question is a 1968 Timex Marlin. As best as I could tell, it has a #24 movement. He brought it to a local jeweler but was told the watch couldn't be repaired. He decided to look at the movement and saw that the hairspring for the balance wheel is bent up. Since he doesn't have a computer, I found another 68' Marlin on Ebay and purchased it for him so he could swap the movements but keep the original case, crystal and band. The one I got, unfortunately was damaged during shipping.

So the big question is, where can I locate a hairspring or a hairspring and balance wheel for a 1968 Timex Marlin. Also, if between him and I if we are unsuccessful in repairing the watch, are there any members that have a unique interest in a Timex Marlin that may be able to assist.

Thanks from a new member,

Tom in Louisiana.

You should find the service manuals here -> https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B-IKHN7WFKiwLVFQRjQyUUV0bmM

The hairspring is designed to be replaceable, the service manual explains the process. You need to take great care to not loose the retaining pin, or mangle the replacement.

You can also possibly "unfankle" the damaged hairspring. It requires a lot of patience though.

Thanks to both of you for the quick replies. I was looking for a reply button but didn't see one so hopefully you both get the message. I hope JERSEYMO sees the post and I'll download the service manual but I still need to locate a spring

Hairspring, mainspring, click spring. Which part number are you searching for?

Andy, thanks for the question, its the hairspring and I've got one located thanks to JerseyMo. I'm new to the forum and still trying to figure out how to reply directly to the person asking a question.

Thanks again.

You accomplish it by selecting the + Quote command. It will copy their comments like yours above, then you can reply. As it's an open forum, everyone will see your reply. It's designed this way so that all of us gain knowledge from the exchange.

    • All the best, family always comes first, and I believe you have made the right call that you mother deserves your full attention. However, when you need a little outside distraction the guys here will always be available for some banter or a heated discussion on lubrication 🤣.
    • Wire for what? if it's steel then only certain types of steel can be hardened ie high carbon steels: "Mild steel doesn't harden very well. It doesn't have enough carbon. Get something like O1, silver steel or if you want to go full watchmaker, then Sandvik 20AP". Source
    • I'm wondering if there's any specific type of wire I should get for hardening? I would assume it doesn't matter as long as the wire doesn't melt before it is at temp.
    • Thanks Michael, sorry you were affected by this terrible condition. It can happen to anyone, 50's is the starting territory for it. My mum has been telling me for decades, " if i lose my marbles then shoot me",  my standard reply for that has always been " dont worry mum i bought the shotgun years ago ".  The same goes for me, not being able to communicate or comprehend is a very lonely place, now known to me as Aphasia. My mum had no warning of arriving there, I've had my warning and it was my mum that gave it to me.
    • It's the hole in the mainplate that has become too big due to wear. I will try with some fine abrasive paper wrapped around a small file. I will start with 3000 grit and see what effect that has. Or I could try with a homemade burnisher. Anyway, I will post the result here soon.
