Yes, I believe many reason like this today, and if enough people "wait" it will become a self-fulfilling prophecy. I'm not attacking your argument just stating the fact. Nobody wants to take the risk of becoming a loser so everyone looks at and waits for each other.
Since it looks like John's right about the crystal needing to come off to even clean up the face, I think there's not much I can do here other than recommend someone to service it. Even my time polishing the crystal may be wasted since he may opt for a new/correct one. This one sits too high.

I did see a video on u tube about an extremely thin Vacheron that had a "floating barrel" there wasnt enough room to have a bridge on the other side/ and or/ the plate wasnt thick enough to accomodate a pivot hole on one side.
