A four jaw chuck is indispensable, especially with the lower priced lathe. As I said earlier, it is the only way you can get something to run true by clocking the job with a dial test indicator. These lathes have nothing like the quality or accuracy of proper watchmakers lathes.

 

I guess i'm using my watchmakers lathe as a benchmark and I am expecting way too much :)

Four jaw chuck is only about £70 so I may just grab one.

Mark I have a three jaw chuck that fits on my star lathe and the jaws are stepped and so can be turned. It is Swiss and although not as accurate as a collet is pretty dam close and also not sure it is necessary for larger work.

I also have one but it's 8mm and so it's difficult to use larger stock without first cutting it down. Very handy to have though, I use it a lot.

Ok. I trhought about that after I posted. I would have thought that a three jaw would still be more accurate than 1/3 of a mm.

It is just one big learning curve
