Hi 

I'm still learning on a AS1700. It didn't work until I put it through a clean.  Then it looked good on the time grapher for a while.  Though I noticed that the power reserve didn't last long.  While attempting to get a look at the mainspring, it popped out of the barrel and I had to rewind it.  Though I forgot to add more anti slipping grease.  Would that be necessary?   BTW, this was the first time I was able to rewind a spring.  

Now the rate is varying on the time grapher from -170 to +10 over 20 seconds or so.  Besides automatic, the movement allows manual winding.  I don't know how much spring resistance should be felt at a full wind.  There doesn't seem to be too much compared to a manual only wind.

Any thoughts welcome

How long does the does the power last for after you have wound it up?

When you are manually winding it up can you feel a sudden more resistance and then hear a zzza faint sound?

When your winding up manually see if you can count about 7 turns of the mainspring that should be fully wound.

If you hear slipping early then may be too much grease.

What type of mainspring is it? Is it the old 2 piece one? I have had this problem with the very old ones they just slip all the time and I get about 4 to 6 hours of reserve.

May be the escapement etc has a problem. Was it touched when you took the barrel out?

Was it working good before?

Braking grease is necessary and should be done before you can carry out tests.

Try winding full through the detached manual wind to see how long it runs on full wind.

In case of power discharge, possible issue with barrel, MS and lubrication.

The self winding mech, should be well serviced, tear down the module, check pivots and jewels/ holes, use recommended oil. Reversers require special attension ,clean  and only special oil.There are proceedures for test of the selfwinder mech.

Lets see if it runs Ok then as you first observed on timegrapher.

The MS is new.  After about seven winds I can hear/feel it slip.  Though, very subtle.  

It was very erratic before I "serviced " it.  Though, it looked good on the time grapher afterward.  But, I only observed it for a short while.  Now, after rewinding the MS it looks poorly again.

What steps should I take to troubleshoot?  I'm very much a beginner.  This is about the 5th watch that I've "serviced" and didn't kill.

From what you're saying it doesn't sound like the ms is the fault. I think it's the escapment, palet fork, balance that's at fault giving you those noisy readings. Too much palet jewel grease? Possible damage to the palet fork, escapment or palet fork bridge might even be the jewels are warn.

What type of oil grease did you use?

Could be dirt in that area. Have check and see. Can you take a photo of it a close up of that area?

      Been there. Worn that Tshirt.  'ping'. Hands and knees. Nothing. Nada. 20 minutes? Ha! I found it 7 month later. How? Well, after advice from a member, I invested in a £4 UV light torch.  Hands and knees looking for a 'ping' from a Sekonda, found them both within 30 seconds. UV makes the jewel shine. easy peasy. Could have taken longer. Just lucky on the location of the search. Hope this helps.

      Thanks Dell. I thought about silver soldering. Have never done it but would like to give it a go. Do you think to put flux on the butted joint then run the solder in or to maybe brace it with a piece of scrap spring steel?

      Never and others. Yes, like you I do spend a fair amount of time reading the contents of this forum. I find it better that any other. I did run a forum for a few years. Really enjoyed it, but became so engrossed that it did affect my health. I gave to to others to run. Not been back. I did ask and listen to members comments and it worked well.    Costs Having a domain name, £10 annually.  Register the site with a forum company, free. Build the site using the forum company guide lines, free. It looked and ran almost the same a Mark's. All the same facilities. The cost was only £5 per month, but counted visits (views). If I recall, it was that price for 5,000 views. Each extra 5,000 views increased the price by £2 per month. Success was my own personal undoing. From £5 per month initially, it rose to £60 a month and looked like increasing. This was 10 years ago. I could not afford that, and asked it anyone would like to take over and someone did. I would assume that this is the price that Mark is funding for us all. His return is our continued comments on the internet about his course, and the fact that many of the big names on YouTube mention him as their Tutor. Those of us who have done, and are still using, his course, benefit. In comparison to other courses, I can't believe how cheap it is, and the value is exceptional. It is the structure that gives the value. Long may Mark reign. Ross

      Hi all, total newbie to watchmaking and I've had a bit of a mishap. Just completing level 2 and was doing ok, but I was just on the last part of the reassembly of my ST3620 when the balance end stone shot across the room, just as I was trying to see if I had put the correct amount of oil between it and the balance end, aarrrgh! Been on my hands and knees combing the carpet for 20mins looking for it but to no avail. Does anybody know where I can get a replacement from and what to look for please?? Thanks.
