Introduction for a complete newbie and project plan

Hi everyone

I have been collecting watches for a while but the desire to "create" my own has risen significantly in the last year or so. I have acquired a few Hamilton 917 pocket watch movement that I intend to recase. I have been reading a lot trying to find details on case, hand sizes, dials, crowns, movement maintenance, stem cutting techniques, screw polishing...I am no expert but since I am pretty dexterous and winter is upon us I figured I would hunker down and start now.

I have seen some of the watches made by DonJW and they look great to me and I would like to replicate some of that work. My goal is to try to build two watches one for my dad and brother so I can share my passion with them.

I welcome any tips and guidance. I have no desire to buy china made stuff and would rather source parts from trusted sellers (preferably in the US for convenience).

nice being here
