Movement id help again...

Recommended Posts

Working on an old movement just to (after cleaning) find that one of the escapement wheel pivots is gone.

Another issue is that someone have, as it appears, replaced the pallet fork cock and in the process ground down the ”new” one to make the height fit. But...the jewel hole does not match the lower one in the base plate 100%, making the pallet fork sit a bit tilted. Wonder if that ever worked...?

Talking mod’s I note that escapement wheels for this type of basic design are pretty similar. If I find one that is just slightly too long or short, would it be feasable to shift the jewels slightly in or out to make it work. I realize it’s not going to be easy to get a decent end shake....

In any case, if there’s someone who can id the movement, I would appreciate it. Not likely there are spares around, but who knows.

I assembled the important items to hopefully make the id easier.

Hi and thanks for the feedback.

But I can't get that id to work out with the other features of the watch as it's coming from a tank style watch that seems to be from the 30's.

And there's no shock protection either, which I would have guessed would be there in a 60's design

My assumption is a much older movement...

What do you say...?

Well it might be from that era too ,seen a lot of different examples during the years. I saw there were a datasheet in the resource page here so maybe the left version called Cal.1149 could fit as your movement?

attached is a close-up photo of the key-less works.

I flipped through most of the 10,5"' size movements on Ranfft but couldn't find anything that was close.

The yoke seems unusually short and straight compared to most designs I see on Ranfft.

Where does other people find designs and pictures to compare against?

This is a Derby calibre 33 movement.

Spot on !

The Derby 40 on Ranfft is close on the key-less stuff but looks more modern otherwise.

But 17-jewels (https://17jewels.info/movements/d/derby/derby-33/ ) shows one that's identical except for the the shock proof add-on that my movement doesn't have.

Derby can't have been a large manufacturer as there's not much info to be found (so far at least) .

And the name is strangely English sounding for a Swiss origin or what do you say?

And there seems to be spares around..:)

Many thanks, deeply appreciated!

Nice one @wls1971! I'd gone through all the 'usual' suspects but, like @bsoderling hadn't come across the Derby. Not one I've heard of before either! A nice looking movement though ... I like the curved symmetry of those bridges.

Derby does seem to be a Swiss manufacturer. Some makers deliberately gave themselves a more English sounding name to make them more 'accessible' to large markets like the US. According to this page ... https://www.watch-wiki.net/index.php?title=ASUAG ... Derby became part of Ebauches SA in 1941.

Good luck with getting this one going @bsoderling. If you do let us know how it turns out as I'd be interested to see the finished item with dial. Now back to the oh-so-common ETA movement I'm working on ... !
