Voston Amphibia into a #53 Komandirskie case

Recommended Posts

What I would like to do is install a 2416 or 2415 movement out of a Vostok Amphibia into a #53 Komandirskie case. I know the movement will be skewed in the case, but, I am concerned about the crown stem length and if the crown threads are the same and other problems I may run into. I do not have either of the cases or movements to compare to so I am asking in advance to see if it can be done and if there are any parts I need to find/order.
Thank you in advance, jimzilla.

Hello Jimzilla;

Unfortunately you posted your question under the wrong chapter, but these days that seems all okay, so not to worry ;)

To answer your question(s); Vostoks are extremely versatile and one can do a lot with them, hence I'm a big fan of these watches. However in this (#53) case your wish is not going to be fulfilled :( The 2415 and 2416 do have an automatic winding system, which do increase the height of the movement and therefor they do not fit in a Komandirskie #53 case. With the correct spacer-ring they may drop in, but there is "no-way" you get the back-lid back on.

The larger Amphibian crown doesn't fit on the small #53 case crown fitting either. However you could use the original #53 case crown & stem to fit the movement.

As for the dials, you are limited in dial choice which do have the correct dial-feet position, but of course you can modify any other Vostok dial and make them fit.

For the Komandirskie #53 case it's either the 2409 or the 2414 movement, which IMHO, do run (after some adjustments) even more accurately than the 2415 or 2416

Thank you Endeavor for the tek. I will be on the lookout for 2409 and 2414 movements as well as some other parts, thank you and

best regards, James.

P.S......  In case you are interested Endavor I invented a little tool out of a Vostok Case back to polish the cases and crystal's on vostok's

They work well and you pr1555361860_CBM1(394x525).jpg.831abc40bd72cad40418b8f20135b837.jpgobably have all the parts just laying around!

A smart idea ! What do you use inside the back-lid to polish with?

The 2409 (no date) and the 2414 (with date) and not hard to get. If possible try to get a new Komandirskie, the whole package comes (with a bit of luck) cheaper than just a movement. My experience with used watches / movements is that they (nearly all) never been serviced and therefor their timekeeping is not as good. Most of my 2409 and 2414 run within 5 sec/day.

VWatchie is also into Vostoks and here a link to our collection;

And yes, the Amphibian hands will fit on the 2409 and the 2414. Broadly speaking the 2415 and 2416 are 2409 and 2414 with additional automatic winding. Quite a few, not all, parts are interchangeable. Hands and dials are.

The 2409 and 2414 movement with fit Komandirskie and the Ampibian housings (different spacer rings). The Amphibian housings do have 3x different winding stem-length; the 420-housing the shortest and if I well remember the 110-housing has the longest winding stem.

Long stem length;

Medium stem length;

Short stem length;

Through time I have a drawer full of movements, parts and housings. I'n not so keen on the Komandirskie housings as I like the 200mtr waterproof of the Amphibians and they are Stainless Steel, so you can polish them without problems ;)

Ah, now I get it :thumbsu: It literally "speeds up" the process ! I'm going to build one; thanks a lot ;)

I always knew the WUS had a big Vostok fan-base unlike, I'm said to say, on this forum. But, so far I haven't discovered on WUS that they go in-depth into watch repair, what they do on this forum :)

Am I wrong in my observations?

I love Russian watches.

I would love to see Mark do a tear-down on a Vostok movement like he did recently with the Chinese clone 2824.

Maybe even a 3133 or 3017. The problem is finding parts, as they are not so readily available compared to the "simple" 2414/2416/etc.

Seems pretty accurate from my limited observations. I just completed my first watch overhaul. An ebay lot of four vostoks, two 2409a's became one. I'm getting into watch repair because its not cost effective to get these watches fixed professionally. I got some practice pieces before I tackle my more beloved Vostoks.

+1 for a Russian watch lover on this forum.

    • I need to see photos of the whole movement before I comment.
    • Hi @Jon, so, from one extreme to another the beat error is 0.1(min.pos) to 0.2(msx.pos), and as you mentioned the rate does up and down dramatically. Also checked the position of the collet, and the collet is not central to the jewel on the balance cock. Balance moves freely, per my understanding.   So, after 24h the ampl. fell down by approx 20 deg, which I would assume is expected. After adjusting the endshake I believe I gained around +10 deg. of balance movement. Which is great, and overall the balance is not at 220'ish deg.   What I did next, some might think is non-orthodox, but was wort a try. I too the mainspring out, checked again for endshake and if the pin moves freely, and cleaned everything. Usually when installing the mainspring I would use some barrel grease on the barrel walls, install the spring and put a 2-3 drops of D-5 oil on top of the wounded spring and in the places where the arbor sits. This time I took the spring and applied a ultra this coat of Molykote Dx paste on the whole spring, before installing it in to the barrel, and added some oil to the arbor as usual.  The result improved, at a full wound the balance produces about 230-237 deg. @JohnR725 I'm getting closer to 300 😃   What I am noticing, there is a fluctuation in amplitude. With time it would rise and drop about total 8-10 deg in an interval about 2 minutes. I assumed this ruled out the power transfer from the barrel itself. So I took the gear train out, cleaned and lubed.
    • Thank you so much, Hector and CJ. I appreciate the tech sheet and the video. Gasp, I think I will make the attempt. What's the worst that can happen? I think there may be a new balance complete in my future, though.  I'll update the post and let you know the result. R, Frank
    • So here is the new base (v 2.1), I made it so that the base will fit over and swallow the stump of the hand pusher tool (or at least my clone of the tool), I also reduced the OD of the bottom skirt a little as it looked/felt a little large, here are a few pictures and the fake .pdf file which you need to convert to .zip once downloaded.   The cut-out seen on the below image on the bottom of the base should swallow the OD (40 mm, +0.1 mm tolerance) of the stump and the height of the stump 9.5mm (measured to 9.1mm, but rounded to 9.5mm) - let me know if this works for your tool.   Note, I think you may need to print supports for the new internal shelf created? Here is the fake .pdf for just the FreeCAD base file and 3mf files Modular Movement Holder.pdf Here is the fake pdf for complete set of the new base and ring FreeCAD/3mf files: Modular Movement Holder base and ring v 2.1.pdf However, I'm wondering how often you could use this feature, adding the dial usually increases the OD of the movement, so you would need a new (larger) adapter ring tuned to the OD of the dial and I wouldn't like to grip the dial in any kind of movement holder if It could be avoided for fear of damaging it. Maybe I'm misunderstanding you?
    • Hi Frank, you have dived headlong into the deep end. Hairspring work has to be the scariest thing a newbie has to tackle. Your hairspring appears to be bent and just putting it back into the regulator would not allow the balance to work properly. It might start oscillating but the performance would not be good. The proper thing to do is to unstud the hairspring, remove the hairspring from the balance, reinstall the hairspring on the stud carrier, reshape the endcurve and centre the collet to the balance jewel hole. This challenge would either make you or break you. Hope that you will be able to fix your watch. Welcome to the world of watchmaking.  Watch this video. It think it'll give you an idea of the task ahead. From your 1st photo, I think you have a etachron type stud. Let me see if I can find a video on how to remove it from the arm.
