Automatic pocket watch?

Recommended Posts

I saw an ad recently for an automatic pocket watch.    I thought maybe some marketing intern was just throwing around watch-sounding buzzwords, but the body of the ad indicated that the watch was supposed to be self winding.

Is that a thing, automatic pocket watches?  It would seem to me that, in a pocket rather than on a wrist, there wouldn’t be enough movement to keep it wound.

Was this something that watch companies regularly did, or is this one of those “seemed like a good idea at the time” things ?

Below is a Breguet designed automatic pocket watch movement from 1780, among the first self winding watch movements. Not sure why someone would make one other than an ode to these early innovations... breguet-ndeg15_mouvement_opt_0.jpeg
