  1. Hello everyone, I just wanted to show off my first custom build. I've always wanted something that never existed anywhere before. I knew I wanted to base it off the venerable Swiss 6498 manual wind movement. I also wanted to use an old 12s pocket watch dial because they are fairly close in size to the 6498 dials and could work with a few minor modifications. I first sourced a dial, after some lengthy searching, I found a NOS Elgin. It had never been used and had the perfect visual feel I was going for. The numbers were all gold and in keeping with that vibe, I next ordered a gold colored Chinese case for the 6498. I also found an old Arnex pocket watch with a pristine 6498 movement but a rough case. I had the hardest time deciding what strap I should use. I knew I wanted leather, but that was it. I had nearly settled on an Ostrich strap but I happened upon a Russian made Laco strap and fell in love with it. It has a very unique design that would be perfect for my watch. As the parts began arriving I could almost see it on my wrist. The very last item to arrive was the case, 8 weeks from China, I think maybe they walked it to my house. I fist started with the dial. I clipped the dial feet off and then proceeded to slot the sub seconds hole as the Elgin 12s sub seconds hole was closer to the center than the one on 6498. And yes, the seconds hand is not centered in the sub seconds face, but I'm not the least bothered by it. I had to modify the movement retaining ring also as the Elgin dial is quite a bit thicker. I was able to reuse the hands that came with the Arnex because they fit my theme well. S0, this is a true Frankenstein with Swiss, American, Chinese and Russian parts, but it's all my design. I love it. Thank you for reading.

  2. Am I missing something? I've never heard of the term "automatic" used in association with any watch that takes a battery... And to answer OPs question, I have ran my watches through the demagnetiser running without any apparent ill effect. But you might want to if you can to stay on the safe side

  3. That is called a nylon gasket. As mentioned above already it does not need to be replaced, and an Ebay watch press is fine.

  4. Hi Joel, How did you diagnose water intrusion, did you actually see moisture inside? Dose it run at all? Could hands be rubbing? I move hands away from each other.

  5. You are asking for authenticity opinions, now beside that this is the wrong section for that, you really, really have to post pictures if you want meaningful replies.

  6. Have you found the tech sheet for your caliber? They often actually list the cgs. Otherwise there are tables that correspond cgs to ligne size, which would be pretty close. If you need it spot on you'll need to have a selection of springs of known cgs, vibrate one that seems about right, check the diameter, then there's a simple formula to determine the correct cgs. Found one of the tables, it's in French but easy to figure out. If doing the test spring process, the formula is K=K' (D/D') 2 K is the CGS number you're looking for K' is the CGS of the spring you test D is the diameter of spring you need, at the pinning point D' is the diameter of the correctly vibrated test spring at the pinning point. Sorry to the OP Joe and I are hijacking the thread a bit, maybe a mod could move it to a new thread?

  8. If the paint has already gone what about a touch of solder solder paste applied by a pin to the joint?

  10. If it was me I would first just massage the spring at the 07:00 o'clock position. You might be lucky in thats all thats need moving. What I call the terminal curve (Blue) is critical that it has a uniform curve in relation to the curve of the main body of the spring. If not when regulating the spring it will go out of centre.

  12. ... and here it is half a day later. Things are settling down quite nicely. Bear in mind that other than cleaning the random bunch of BFG866 parts, and throwing them all together, I've done nothing else yet. No regulation or adjusting.

  15. Just curious; what is or what is meant by "fleabay"? I Googled it and found https://fleabay.net/ but under the category "Jewelry & Watches" I only found three items; a pair of earrings, a bracelet, and a woman's watch. Perhaps it is a synonym for shopping used stuff online!? Thanks!

  21. sigh..... luckily, I already purchased a replacement. I know this can be fixed with some patience and fine point tweezers, but right now I just want the watch running again. I'll use this as practice at some point, but for now, it's getting replaced.

  22. I have used a piece of paper with a small slit. Starting at the collet and moving the paper in a circle to follow the coil . This keeps the tangled part above the paper and easier to untangle with tweezers as you rotate the paper and move your way outward. Thoughts? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

  24. Hi Glasso welcome to the forum I have attached the tech sheets for the miyota OS11 for your intrest, Follow jdm's advise and pick out what remains of the glass carefully look and see if it has a gasket sealing the glass if so be careful removing it. Once measured and you have the dimentions Cousins.uk watch parts will be able to supply or on ebay look for a seller "watchfan" he seems to have a comprehensive list. 25. Thanks VWatchie I am attempting the date wheel issue this weekend hopefully 16-11-2019. I will take some close up pics with my iPhone to see if the pics are as good. If I find the fault I'll share it. I bought a 10 x zoom for my iPhone camera, so wish me luck. Once again thank you for the detail Kind regards

  26. The pile of Slava automatic parts arrived, and I had a quick rummage through them last night. I started with that green pile of snot on the right, and after a lot of cleaning and a small amount of brute force, I extracted the mechanism from the case. It was held in by a stem that was rusted solidly in place. Once extracted, it got torn down. I discarded the dial into my scrap pile for the time being, it is a complete mess. I then cleaned and partially re-assembled the mechanism, to the point where it is all ticking away nicely, but still dialless. The only part other than the dial and stem that needed replacing was the day disk, but there were a couple of clean examples in with the rest of the spares. It is now running on the bench, as is the mechanism with the red hands next to the cardboard box in the picture above. That case needed a 322 crystal (which I had) and a stem (which I do not have). So, I'll need to source couple of stems, and do a little more work, and I should have two complete working dual barreled automatics. With a little more part swapping, I may even be able to get one or perhaps at a pinch two more going, using the remaining stuff and parts from another donor in my spares pile, but I may be short of some keyless work bits. I'll keep you all posted with my progress. I did some damage though. While attempting to remove the dial, I had the "green gunker" movement in a movement holder and it kept popping out. I then grabbed it between my thumb and forefinger to get a better grip. Thinking to myself "I had better be really careful here, or I'll stab myself in the thumb with this screwdriver", I then proceeded to stab myself violently in the thumb with the screwdriver. Much profanity and not a little blood later I passed my wife with my thumb in my mouth. "What are you doing" I was asked. I refrained from replying "Nothing dear, just bleeding to death", as I headed off to grab the Dettol and the Elastoplast. So today I have a throbbing left thumb with an interesting blue tattoo mark. Sometimes I wonder if this game is too dangerous and perhaps I should take up something safer. Base jumping perhaps.
