  1. Today's bench time journey began with the exploration of a stash of non runners from what I have dubbed "The FS Collection". I found that the coil had come off the balance so I went to my parts bins. Knowing this is a model 85 I was at first a bit unsure because the repalcment part I found looked different. But, "FS" aka Fred Smythe was a quality control engineer at Timex so I just figured this was another one of his expermiental movments. So cut to the chase, I swapped in the NOS part popped in a battery and off it went. Still under bench test for now.

  2. I agree with this, a good lighting makes wounders. Usually when I post here I take a quick picture with my phone and the 21Mp is quite fair and the files are small enough to upload. But a camera, correct lighting and a macro is what it takes to do some good movement por*. This pictures is just a part of a picture since I can't upload the complete one (Camera is a Sony A7R II 42,4 Mp so the files becomes large) but one gets what the difference in ligting do compared to my phone ones, this is just a part of the picture, it is just over 800k large! (or small).....

  7. A gas chromatograph (GC) paired with a mass spectrometer (MS) detector, very sensitive detector which ionizes and then identifies the analyte coming from the GC. Can give an identification as to the identity of each of the compounds you manage to resolve from your sample using the GC.

  8. I think there would be several possibilities to make a device like that to work. This sunday I got an hour to myself from my other household duties so I sat down and thought things throug. Eldery devices use a finely tuned spring and balance to compare the oscillation against, when the two balances are in sync you make a reading towards a scale. But modern equipment probably need something else to detect the spokes on a balance, since it's rotating on its pivot I don't think you could use sound to determine the oscillation. One probly wouldn't want to touch anything on the setup so two methodes comes into mind: 1. Use a Hall sensor. 2. Use light sensitive electronics. I think a hallsensor would work really good but I don't know how small thiny hairsprings would react to an electric field so I will go for a light sensitive sensor. Just out of chance I pulled out a TCRT5000 Reflective Infrared Sensor out of my Arduino toybox and made a preliminary test. I sometimes design high speed odometers for autonomous vehicles so this was a different challenge, to get a device which detect low frequencie movements. A hairspring in some cases oscillate at 18000 A/h which is a frequency off (18000/3600) 5Hz. The setup was able to detect even lower frequencies so I don't Think the Electronics will be the challenge but the design of the sensor setup might take an hour or two. I plan to use a non polarizing glas from a microscope on which the balance can spin freely. I only took 20 minutes this time to prove the concept and it will probaly work like a charm so this is something I will put into the projects que for fun things to do with your 3-D printer a dark Nordic Winter night.

Have taken a look through and that is perfect for my question. It looks to be near enough the exact same movement, though yours is a bit posher, it has a jewelled pallet fork pivot. thanks again.

  11. Yes, the seconds are friction fitted and can be removed using a pair of hand levers or .80mm screwdrivers inserted into the small slots seen in the picture. Apply steady, upward pressure...not too much because the seconds disc may warp if you push up too hard. Slow and steady. Here a link to a jump hour overhaul I did a few years ago

  12. Hi Louis It is the movement protection cover and as Andy explained it will only fit one way, so with gentle pressure try in the various positions but above all be very careful as the do break easilly

  13. Making lubricants is like making a cake !! All the ingredients are available but often in different quality levels. When mixed together the cake has all the same ingredients but how much of each? Then it is processed (mixed and cooked!) to form the cake, but mixed or cooked for how long and in what at what temperature etc. Then we have a cake, but what does it feel/taste like and does it turn out like you wanted? Moebius oils seem to use very high quality ingredients and are finely tuned to achieve their desired performance in high end markets. Lower cost lubricants may work fine but maybe not in the extreme. professionals need to meet customers needs, amateurs/hobbyists doing their own watches etc may be able to use lower cost brands. You pays your price!

  14. It appears to fit with the pegs pointing down in to the watch and the longest of the curved tabs in the vicinity of the winding stem. Proceed with caution, these things break very easily.

  19. Hmmm.. Practice makes perfect, I'm impressed. If I did a similar video, I would have to bleep put all the bits where I launched the spring on to the carpet past my left ear, and then spent ages crawling round looking for it, or sent the movement flying out of the movement holder. I suspect any video I produced would be nearer 31 minutes than your 31 seconds.
