  3. Hey folks, I'd like to share a watch I put together for my Brother's birthday. The movement is a pretty old Unitas 6497 which I picked up from the widow of a watchmaker a year or so back, the plates have been skeletonised and I'm pretty sure this was a once off job by the watchmaker. The mainplate is brass, and the decorated bridge plates appear to have been plated (quite crudely, when inspected under a loupe). The movement is keeping great time now that it is serviced. I made an attempt at a logo using the film-free transfer technique Mark has used in a couple of recent Youtube videos. The logo didn't adhere very well to the dial, not particularly happy with it. In person and to the naked eye it looks pretty good I think. The case is a 41mm case I picked up from Ofrei, who I sourced the dial and hands from also. Hope ye like it!

  5. Having recently ordered and recceived my Komodo, (a Seiko NH35 powered microbrand diver), I did a review video as I was very impressed with the quality of it. I can also say the communication from Helm is exemplary, to the point they have, a short while ago mailed regarding my comments on the bracelet / strap fitted at packaging in the video, I'm waiting on another microbrand I ordered on a Kickstarter which is supposed to be due to ship very soon and have to say, the updates on the progress are very sparse compared to the sale adverts that keep appearing so far so this one is a very pleasant change. Link here for anyone interested, thanks. Mike

  6. This subject has previously been covered, Endsrones limit the staffs axial play thence all else including very important impulse jewel stays within bound, further pivot rests on endstone instead of pivot shoulder. You can remove endstones to clean, peg and oil. Put some penetrating oil on the two little screws, let sink in over night, unscrew the next day. Regards joe

  9. I’ve been looking at them. Tweezer nose or tweezer nose bent sound like they should be up to the job. https://www.cousinsuk.com/product/xuron-usa-made-pliers

  11. Agree with all above. If you decide to remove the endstone assembly, soak in naphta for a day or use penetrating oil on the screws, leave oil to soak-in over night. Sharpen a screwdriver to perfect fit, place the cock on a hard flat surface, press rather hard on the screwdriver, if it dosn,t unscrew easy, soak more. These little screws get stripped easy.

  12. Nothing special about winding a carbon steel spring other than the fact that they may break especially if old and set. The center eye that fits the arbor is probably sprung on this old spring and since it is a scrap movement, you should take your round nose pliers and practice closing it a bit. Go gently and in small increments. if you can successfully close the center eye without breaking it, it should then fit a MS winder very nicely. RMD

  13. Mark shows you how to remove the jewel setting in this video: The first part of the video shows the screw heads on the underside of the balance cock. In your case you will only have to clean and oil the jewel and not fit a new jewel like the rest of the video shows.

  14. Ya, Looks like the crown wheel ring. No panic, just don,t loose any parts, give it a good clean, will work with you for reassembly. Easy easy.

  15. Maybe the crown wheel ring? Try whether it fits on the crown wheel post and if it does see whether the crown wheel fits on it.

  16. Use something absorbent to wick out the cleaning fluid before you oil. Check for cleanliness before oiling. You may need to repeat a few times. Anilv

  17. If there's no feasible way to get the cap off I would strongly recommend against pegwooding the hole. If your wood breaks you're humped. And it do break.

  18. Hi Try pegging with peg wood and inspect it after use, If you have a compressed air can just lightly give it a puff, then under a strong loupe for final inspection you should see no specks

  19. If it has really old dried oil then it will need a good soak in a de-greasing agent first. If still not happy then you will have to bent a couple of the retaining prongs back to remove the cap jewel. My fear with this method is bending back the prongs and achieving the correct force to secure the jewel.

  20. Hi Had a look at some other forums regarding these and also in the bestfit catalogue, from information gathered its best to clean in situ using an ultrasonic as per Clockboys post.

  21. All right you guys.... In a fit of nostalgia I went on ebay and ordered myself a safety razor. Well to quote the great philosopher Yogi Berra."NOSTALGIA AIN'T WHAT IT USED TO BE "! it arived in all it's chrome plated glory along with a package of TREET razor blades..Made to Pakistan standards, I cast a dubious eye upon them, but none the less loaded the razor. I put on my glasses and got busy. I leaned something in the process , the reason why Sikhs don't shave .the blade was awful. I used the lightest possible touch ,and it was still a blood letting. Or is this normal ? is the point of the first shave to slice off all the irregularities on your face so the second shave is smoother? I also remembered why I put the stupid thing down after wilkinson sword stopped making blades in the UK. I am not going to give up just yet. I am going to try another sort of blade,

  22. I have a Rolls in the collection. It's a kind of evolutionary step between a straight and a safety in that it comprises what appears to be a 1.5 inch section from a straight razor with a safety razor type handle attached. It all comes in a cunningly designed case which contains a honing surface on the inside of one lid, and a stropping surface on the inside of the other lid, and a fiendishly devised mechanism to allow the blade to be honed and stropped at the precisely correct angle within the case. I have used mine and does deliver quite a good shave but being a half way house between a straight and a DE it's neither as good as the straight nor as quick as the Gillettes. I have also had pass through the collection a number of Gem and Ever Ready single edge safety razors, a couple of Valet Autostrop razors which also use a SE safety razor blade but are cleverly designed so that a specially made strop can be threaded through the razor head and the blade stropped in situ, and a Wilkinson Sword 7 day set which is like a cross between an Autostrop and a Rolls; it uses blades that look similar to the Rolls blades and has an Autostrop type arrangement for keeping them stropped. It's called a 7 day set because it comes with 7 blades, marked with the days of the week, so that you only have to bother with a (marathon) stropping session once a week and just use a different blade each day.

If you have adblocker you might need to disable it for mediafire. These are safe I have tested them.
