  1. The soldering iron trick should work well, since there is a lot of stem exposed. tin your iron, so it has a drop of molten solder on it, and hold the iron and drop of molten solder on the stem a minute or so. The molten solder allows faster heat transfer, and you want it to be fast. Quickly chuck the stem in your pin vice, and turn the crown off. It should back right off. You must work quickly as the pin vice will sink heat from the small stem quickly. As to trimming stems, decent ones are quite hard, so no cheapy cutters allowed! (note 2824 stems are all over eBay like measles) I like to thread the stem into a die plate, make the cut, and then back the stem through the plate to straighten any distorted threads. A light filing is nice- grab the stem in your cordless drill and spin it while applying light pressure with a Swiss pattern file. Run it through the die plate again. Try the fit- if it's "snug" in the crown, leave it be. If it unscrews while trying to set time or date, use an extra fine oiler (the black one) and apply the tiniest amount of PURPLE (low strength) locktite on there I can't remember the number, but it's purple for up to 1/4" fasteners. You may find it at an auto supply house as it is sold for use with carburetor adjustment screws, to keep them from moving. If you use the blue (and certainly don't use red!!!) you will be in the same boat next time... I think this is watchmaking 101, but maybe not...

  3. Hello All; Surely "invented" before, but I've never seen it..... therefor I call it the "Screw-peg" ® Struggling to get a 70-years old NOS ladies movement to run properly, I had some serious pegging of very small jewels to do, including the very small balance pivot jewels. (if curious, read https://www.watchrepairtalk.com/topic/9705-servicing-laco-503-501/) My experiences with these tiny holes are that if you get the tip of peg-wood in the jewel-bore, it brakes off easily. Next to that, once you got the peg-wood in, while rotating, your fingers slide & rotate down. Once the fingers are to the end of the peg-wood, and some more pegging is required, you either have to pull the wood and try it again or; try, with the peg-wood still in the bore, to get your fingers back on top of the peg-wood ........ with a very high probability that the peg-wood tip brakes off; left behind stuck in the jewel Something had to be thought of ........ ; I had a box full of toothpicks which were 1.6mm in diameter. One of my screwdrivers took 1.6mm steel tips. I removed the steel tip, cut one end of the toothpick off and inserted the toothpick in the screwdriver-handle. It's a nice press fit. The toothpick-tip can be sharpened multiple times by either a knife or dressing it on a diamond stone. Now, with the peg-wood tip in the jewel, you can rotate as long as you deem required. I also found to have very high control over steadiness, angle, rotation and applied pressure. It works for me like a treat ! Of course the ® isn't

  4. As you have identified the mainspring could be too strong certainly the first thing to check. A few years ago I had this issue with a Bulova when I checked the mainspring way over strength. I found these suggestions on the net: Choices:-weaker ms-replace balance complete or vibrate a stronger hs to the balance.-might try oiling the pallet arbor pivots...possibly with hp1000 or hp1300.

  6. It's just a standard bezel that, indeed, comes off by prying it off. Be careful when you insert the knife and "work it" around not to damage the bezel click spring or any other components.

  7. I would think it will come off with a case knife, just insert the blade under and see if it starts to lift.

  8. No offense taken at all . I really wanted this Submariner for a while , and paid dearly to get it ... Then after I got it , I didn't wear it at all . And to add insult to injury , I lost about 2K as soon as I walked out the door with it . I recently traded it for an Omega Moon to Mars watch a couple of Baume Mercier watches , a Cherry Seiko diver , and a very Blingy 14k gold an diamond ring . And I feel good about the trade ,....go figure . I do like the Omega....

  10. Can be done, Producing the design; ( desired) frequency is the aim. I plan to write and post an article on the forum, a breif explanation of the dynamics of balance wheel, metalurgics of H/S, industrial proccess of H/S production... which I believe shows the way to a repairman's better understanding of what he is doing. Just needs some time, I am old and lazy. Regards.
