  4. The 4860 has a straight shoulder, the 61 has a tapered shoulder, you would probably have to remove the existing one to determine which one you need, as both were used in several different models and grades. Unfortunately the waltham book isn't more clear, but seeing as they made somewhere near 45 million watches over the years it's not too surprising. There is a book available online, I believe it's the K&D staking set manual, that shows the special stakes and stumps required to replace waltham friction staffs, the hub of the balance wheel can be damaged if you use the wrong tools (experience!)

  5. Not yet, rogart63. I do plan to though. I did run it through the demagnetizer in the hopes that if it was sticking together it would "unstick" apart. That didn't do the trick. I ran the balance through my ultrasonic with the balance attached, so it should have removed any stickiness. That said, if there's a little rust or something that I don't see under 4x magnification, maybe that could do it. I'm glad that yours is running well, with the minor MS exception. Does the clutch on your 1171 give you grief about not staying in position? The one in my Seeland seems to like to go askew, which ultimately denies the winding arbor access to the inside of it without removing the dial again and fudging around with it. It's as if there is too much room for it to get cocked in there. Oh well...it's almost always something. Cheers.

  6. I figured out my keyless works problem. This safety pin looking spring needed to be behind this peg! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  7. 400 Day clocks or anniversary clocks as they are now known are not simple to repair. They are very delicate and can be at times be extremely temperamental. If you do not have the Horolovar 400 day clock repair guide (bible) you will find it pretty near imposable to repair one in quick time. Thank God for the book, it explains everything you need to know. From identifying the movement to what suspension spring to use, the length it needs to be, the position of the two blocks at each end, the place that the pallet fork should be and its position. The book saves you a great deal of time.

  9. Len I have never come across this clock but have read about it. However removing plates from any clock without letting down the mainspring/s is asking for trouble. This particular clock requires the wheels to be wedged with peg wood & then the escape is removed then the wheels are let down slowly with the aid of stiff gloves and protection to your eyes.

  10. Every wheel and arbor in a watch must have endshake, or they will bind stopping then watch. The amount of endsahke must be enough to see with magnification, BUT should not be to excessive. The amount of end shake should be no more than half of the pivot length.
