  1. Looks legit to me, the fakes are usually popular watches like divers. This one is hard to fake as not much market for it. It could be a 'franken' in the sense that the movement has been switched or parts swapped. The shroud around the crown is a nice touch and fits real well so you're probably ok in this sense. On buying from ebay it is important to 'buy' the seller. In this case 'blue_raw' has other watches which look ok so he's not in the 'frankenstein game' . You need to look out for sellers who sell a lot of similar stuffs, eg divers, chronos as they are probably churning them out by the dozen (usually from Thailand or Phillipines). Not saying you should avoid them but you need to know what you're in for and pay acccordingly. Best sellers on ebay are those that advertise watches as found and list them together with other unrelated junk.. I usually avoid 'recently serviced' watches as most of them are bodged together. all in all a good buy.. check back if you have problems getting the caseback open, this ones kinda tricky... :) Anil

  3. Got the new cleaning machine up and running today (many thanks to Jeff at Labanda for overnighting a replacement basket - awesome customer service!!) The Janta unit ran smooth and very quietly. No hassles at all. And here's the results... Nice clean parts in the tray now! Escapement and the train wheels look much better. Ratchet Teeth in the Winding Pinion are spotless as well. I inspected all parts with my 10x loupe and was astounded at the performance of the cleaner. Now for the true test of this cleaning machine - the Base Plate. If you remember in the earlier posts the base plate was horrid, with green, slimy, dried up grease on the posts, and heavy dirt build-up everywhere else. This watch was BADLY in need of a service! Firstly, I soaked the base plate in some Zippo Fluid (thanks for the tip Geo), and then gently bushed around the posts. I also used a fine point to dislodge some of the real hardened deposits around the posts for the keyless work, and then rinsed-and-repeated the lighter fluid and bushing. This is what I ended up with in the bottom of the bowl. ... so how does it look now, after manually cleaning and then a cycle through the cleaning machine? Not bad at all!! I got out the 10x loupe again and checked all the jewel holes and bearing surfaces ... absolutely spotless!! Not bad for a budget cleaning machine that's about 1/4 the price of an Elma. So now I'm waiting on my oils to be delivered before I can re-assemble the movement, (Moebius 8200, 9010, 9415, 9501, and D5), so until the postal service gets their act into gear the project is on pause again *sigh*.

  7. Yeah!!!!! Well done that man, glad it worked out fine. You're not wrong about the fine line. My Clarkson spanner of choice when it comes to watches weighs in at about 15 or 20 grams as this gives me plenty of control. Rarely do I need anything much bigger, unless I'm regulating a fake, then I find the 20lbs lump hammer a good option. Any way, nice one :-)

  8. I think the cell phone will be the death of digital wristwatches ... and not of the mechanical watch. Is it just me, and I could be wrong here, but didn't the mechanical wristwatch resurgence really taken off since the advent of "smartphones"? Bob, you asked if watches are only jewelry these days. Personally, I think it goes deeper than that. Today, in the cheap quartz age, people are inundated with "time". There's a clock on your phone, on the stove, on the computer, in your car, on the Stereo/DVD player ... time is EVERYWHERE!! But it's impersonal, soulless time. A mechanical watch is different physiologically: it beats like a heart, is complex, with many microscopic parts ... just like us: they have a soul. They are also a link back to when the displaying of time was less in your face; and more subtlety on your wrist: a time when we weren't ruled by time ... and people are gravitating back to them for many of these reasons. Hence the value of vintage pieces becoming more desirable. Also, chatting to friends and workmates, I've noticed that a lot of people are getting sick and tried of our throw-away society, where nothing is valued; or of value, anymore. Where everything has designed obsolescence: purposely made to fail, and engineered not to be repaired or serviced. This is not the case with a good quality mechanical watch; as they are purposely designed, with minimal maintenance, to last several lifetimes. And that has great meaning to people these days. A mechanical watch is jewelry, art, a status symbol, and a wonder of movement and engineering that you can wear on wrist: and like my old Flightmaster that I've worn for 16 years, they become a part of you that will be passed on to the next generation. ... steps off the soapbox :fpc:

  9. I have started the course and am really enjoying it. Course one is based around disassembly and reassembly of a eta 2801-2. They had none in stock and suggested the eta 2750 as a substitute. That is what I am working on. I did full disassembly and reassembled the wheel side then while working on the keyless works I shot the set spring across the room. I am patiently waiting arrival of its replacement now. Frustrating but understandable as a beginner I guess. Worst problem so far is that the keyless work of the 2750 is much different then the 2801 in the course photos so I am having trouble there. Overall I would suggest this course to anyone looking to get started. I'm loving it and it's only $75.
