    • I have a taig, which is the cheaper version of a sherline. I also made a tailstock runner. Its best to turn it between centers to get it concentric. As far as a set screw, I would go with a different approach, as any lateral input on the drill bit will shift it slightly and move it out of center. The best option is to turn a bunch of brass sockets for all the bits you have, turn a taper on the end that will go into the tailstock runner, and shellac the drill bit in the socket. Since you already have experience making a runner, you can make another one with an internal taper that matches the external taper you put on the brass sockets.
    • Hello and welcome from Leeds, England.Ā
    • Just wanted to say hello and introduce myself. Iā€™ve been a way from all web forums for a long time so it may take me awhile to get back in the swing of things.Ā  Ā Ā Names Rick, Iā€™m from Lebanon ,VA deep in the mountains of SWVA. Our little slice of heaven has been home for me since 2004. Iā€™m was medically retired as a Master Auto/Diesel Mechanic after 29.5 years.Ā  Ā Ā  Iā€™m an Army artillery veteran and have spent my lifetime working with my hands and fixing things.Ā  Ā  Early in 2024 I took an interest in watchmaking and learning to repair & restore pocket watches. I went crazy šŸ¤Ŗ buying up all sorts of tools, dozens of pocket watches and more than a few wristwatches from the war eras. Ā Somewhere in that process I decided I needed buy a staking set, thatā€™s where my story took a left turn at Albuquerque šŸ¤£.Ā  Ā Ā I bought one small K&D round based set with the glass dome. Ā It was in horrible shape and missing a whole bunch of stakes and stumps. This led to me to buying a ā€œfewā€ more which allowed me to completely fill the original set and even another small K&D starter set. After showing the finished product to some guys in the industry they mentioned I should start restoring them. Ā Ā Ā Thatā€™s where Iā€™m at now. Things have completely taken off and I never expected this level of success. It was just a hobby for an old man to stay busy and now itā€™s taken on a life of its own in some respects.Ā  Ā Ā I joined this site back in July while searching for answers about K&D history and catalogs and immediately found discussions about the Weebly site and that was a game changer for me. Ā Without that site I would not have had the successes I have had.Ā  Ā  Eventually Iā€™ll get back to watchmaking and learning all I can about that, but for now Iā€™m having lots of fun and keeping my hands and mind working, trying to keep myself busy and work within my physical and medical restraints. Iā€™m always learning new things and look forward to sharing what I learn here and helping where I can.Ā  Ā Ā Thanks for having me !Ā
    • Iā€™ve got a few errands to run this morning, but when I get back Iā€™ll grab you some measurements of one of these here. Itā€™s takes just a second to pop them out of the base. I do have extras so if you want one Iā€™ll send it to ya, but either way Iā€™ll grab some measurements for you. I havenā€™t set up my re-plating station yet, but even then some of these anvils are so damaged that they wouldnā€™t be worth trying to plate, so I probably have 6-7 extras.Ā  Ā Ā Ā The center hole is offset and the back side has a bevel ground into it where it touches the anvil front. Iā€™m assuming this is to make sure you install it so the offset hole to catch the inverted stake is in the correct position. Ā I took some random photos to try and show the details. As long as you donā€™t have a little giant anvil itā€™s offset. Ā The little giant ones appear to be dead center.Ā
