Mainspring winding

Recommended Posts

You  know how they say "Feed a cold starve a fever", "Spring ahead & fall back" Well I can never remember which is correct, the same goes for all the other handy sage advice.

So my question is, when winding a spring into a barrel, which way is correct clockwise or counter clockwise? I think when you get a new mainspring in it's little wafer shipping ring the color has some significance? But again what is it the red side up or down?

I know !, that is a dumb question. ( Why don't you write it down when you remove the old one?) " I forgot "

Look closely at the claw on the barrel arbour, as it is designed to grip in one direction.  Now hold it against the centre coil of the spring and it will be self evident which way it should go.

Usually the red side up.  But some movement have the coil in the opposite way. If i hesitate and have forgotten how it should sit i normally find one on google to look at. You can also  figure out if you at the barrel arbor.
