Mangled hairspring, now low amplitude

Recommended Posts

I bought a watch with a mangled hairspring, it's a Bulova 11ANC. I've cleaned the watch and repaired (laugh) the spring. The problem is, no matter what I do to the spring, the amplitude will not go above 120.

I'm aware that the spring shape is not perfect, but I think it's good enough to get better results than that.

What other reasons could cause the issue?

Mainspring is fine. The watch actually runs well on the timegrapher, no undue noise etc. but low amplitude is the fly in the ointment.

Can anyone help? I don't know if the picture help at all.

In my experience with Seiko HS, the more you manipulate them, the worse they perform. In my opinion correcting an HS is the peak of watch repair, and an hobbyist should not be ashamed to replace them.

That H/S needs to be sorted out first. I can clearly see the coils are wrong. Is it flat and is it bouncing between the regutater pins no matter where the regulater is. Get that sorted first and you will find the amplitude will improve. Working with H/Springs can be very time comsuming and in many cases you won't win. It takes hours of practice.
