Mainspring

Can someone tell me, I just put a new mainspring in a barrel by hand, because I don't have a spring winder yet. My question is this, how do I wind it enough to get the spring to engage the barrel arbor?

This is a size 12 american pocket watch

Turn the arbour with either strong tweezers or a pin vice.

Also make sure you have put the spring in the barrel the correct way so it will engage with the hook on the arbor.

It's an easy mistake to put it in the wrong way, something I have been guilty of doing in the past........
