Spot the defect

Recommended Posts

I just came across this and I just can't wok out what is right and wrong

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/361977951212

Apart from the fact that someone has sprayed the insides with oil, the repeat button is missing, the handle is bent, the platform doesn't match

1. I've never seen a carriage clock with a seconds hand

2. Why 2 seperate bells for the alarm and chime? And who would have worked on a clock like this and botched a new bell in like that? And is it normal to wind through the bell?

I can't decide if this is an honest clock that's had a hard life and worth spending some effort on, or if it's a piece of junk... but I'm sure Oldhippy will be along shortly to educate us all

Hmm, not sure why it doesn't show. Try this link

or search for item 361977951212

Thanks

Its made in China and is utter rubbish. I see the seller mentions one like it sold on ebay for £400. If that is so the person has wasted money. The finish and design on this is terrible. The platform you can see is cheap and doesn't match. It's shocking. If a customer had brought it to me to repair I would tell them to throw it away.

Here's the one that sold for £400 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Very-Rare-Collectable-Complication-Striking-Repeating-Carriage-Clock-/132125114708?hash=item1ec3454154%3Ag%3AqSwAAOSwax5YxUiS&nma=true&si=IWUFjdE7tY679NI1fi%2BJzmQXwdQ%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

The similarity is remarkable. According to the feedback, the buyer was very happy...

So what I can't work out is if this is a con artist in China trying hard to make something look old and spending the least possible amount of money... or if they just didn't know how to make a decent one.

It's obvious people that buy this rubbish know nothing about Carriage Clocks. These things are mass produced ebay is flooded with them. From what I can see the seller is doing nothing wrong. Look at the wording that is used they only say old carriage clock, any clock with a handle can be a carriage clock, the word old just means it isn't new.
