Square shank drill bits?

In amongst all my grandfathers watchmakers tools is a small collection of what I assume are self made square shank drill bits.

I've also seen on ebay similar drill bits for sale before, so I am guessing they are some what common.  I'm confused as to why you would make drills on square shanked blue steel rather than round blue steel.

Can anyone explain to me why you would do this?

Thanks Tony

I think they would be too big to be dentist drills as they are around 40mm long, not to mention that the largest ones would drill a 3mm hole.

I didn't photograph them, but I also have some round shank ones of similar size.
