  1. I have found this style of hairspring attachment a few times but was lucky that I did not have to remove them. However I always wondered how I would remove it if I had to. Then I found this vid that shows how to see below:

  2. So I got myself a sorry-state russian microscope (4x-100x) (I believe it's been dropped, so I fixed the broken stand, I cleaned it and I aligned the glass prisms the best I could - work in progress). For more details on the microscope model, checkout http://microscope.modelengines.info/. Samples below. The pictures are taken with a phone by putting it on an eyepiece. The subject is a beat-up balance wheel from a Poljot 2209. Looking through the microscope, the image is clearer, with better contrast and, most important, stereoscopic. Thank you, Bogdan

  4. Since you don't have a beat adjuster on the regulator, you will have to revove the balance and twist the collet round slightly. However with an error this small it will be hard to work out which way to adjust by observation, you will just have to try it. Alternatively you could leave well alone at this stage. I would normally consider anything less than 1ms to be a good result.

  5. Yes, you have that right. Take care not to mark the case back as you undo it. Good luck, and don't forget to post your results

  10. Just found this wee one in pile of previous purchases. Crown in smooth, so it's been well loved. Not real high on repair list but it's a Helvetia.

  12. No doubt a good ladies watch is made to the same high standard as any good gents watch and is no less expensive to buy new, but there are not many collectors of ladies watches. I had a similar conversation with the jeweller I scrapped the Omega with he told me if it isnt Rolex or a fairley new watch he cant sell them and to prove his point he showed me a shoe box sized container of ladies watch movements all coming from scrapped watches he'd taken in. If there is no sentiment attached to the watch it makes no sense to repair. Its a reality but to any watch lover it is a shame, If you want to know if the case is platinum quite a lot of pawnbrokers use gold analyzers now and dont need to do scratch tests they would do this for nothing. Couldnt you have ago at servicing it yourself ?

  14. I use something like the one below. Works OK, but the one I have has too much slop between pusher and barrel. The inner hooking also only works in one direction, so I made some new arbors and modified some existing ones. These and other types can be found on ebay for not that much. Winding by hand may work, but is not a good way to go about. You'll have to wear finger cots to prevent touching the spring. The cots will get stuck between coils, etc. If you're not careful, you'll cone-shape the spring, or scratch the edges (more likely with old carbon steel springs). If you only do this three times per year, it may be an option. I pretty much find reinstalling the spring one of the most frustrating steps in assembling a watch. It doesn't help that I'm stupid and regularly end up winding the spring in the winder barrel in the wrong direction, which means start from scratch.
